BEIJING, July 31 - International Communication Commission of China Film Association was established this Tuesday in a forum regarding Chinese films’ overseas market.
The forum was attended by XIAO Wenge, President of Dynamic Marketing Group (DMG, one of China’s largest independent media groups), CEO Dan Mintz; Paul Schwake, producer of IRON MAN 3 and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4; Evan Daugherty, screenwriter of SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN and a renowned film critic and scholar DAI Jinhua. They discussed about the integration of Chinese and foreign elements in local films and the ways to help Chinese films go abroad.
Dai Jinhua, a professor in Peking University, said it is hard to compare the traditional Chinese images with the foreign hero images. For example, Monkey King and Iron Man. The former is a local ancient mythical image while the latter is a rebellious hero originated from the Cold War era. Yet the released Monkey King-related films in recent years are still relevant and appeal to local audiences. “That is what the Chinese filmmakers need to reflect on. It is a matter of culture, not the film industry.”
Evan Daugherty and Paul Schwake pointed out, the Chinese film industry needs to get stronger and improve its own production system if the Chinese films want to go overseas. Otherwise, it is rather difficult to produce great films even with good scripts. They explained the reasons why Hollywood blockbusters attract worldwide audiences. Hollywood tries to know what audiences need at the beginning of script development stage. Hollywood studios have successful operation because they have done a good job in script development, in production and in promotion as a whole package.
The recent highest-grossing TRANSFORMER 4 has integrated a number of Chinese elements in the hope of better box office performance in China. But Daugherty and Schwake do not think it’s a long-term strategy for to only target the film market in either America or China.
