2015 Summer Movie Guide: Animated Movies

BEIJING July 1, 2025 - Every year, the summer movie season offers a host of eye-popping movies. This summer, an enormous slate of animated movies will hit theaters in China, promising something for everyone.

Many of this summer’s animation titles look familiar to the Chinese audience – most are sequels or adaptations of TV cartoons and comics.

The sequels include SEER 5, the fifth film based on the popular internet game, ROCO KINGDOM 4, a film based on Tencent’s kid-oriented online community, GG BOND MOVIE: ULTIMATE BATTLE, a story of an assembling master named GG Bond, and fairy tale-based SNOW WHITE: THE MYSTERIOUS FATHER.

Last summer, SEER 4 took a total of 62.7 million yuan ($10.1 million) during its theatrical run while ROCO KINGDOM 3 collected 47.7 million yuan ($7.69 million). Similarly, GG BOND MOVIE in 2014 took in 44.9 million yuan ($7.24 million). But China’s SNOW WHITE: THE POWER OF DWARFS only made 17.2 million yuan ($2.77 million).

Meanwhile MR BLACK: GREEN STAR, a new adaptation of famous TV cartoon BLACK CAT DETECTIVE, will hit screens this August. The television series was originally aired from 1984 to 1987 and became beloved by children and adults alike.

Turning a popular cartoon into feature films is something Chinese studios have been frequently trying in recent years. There is a trend towards turning cartoons into summer or Chinese New Year movies, with BOONIE BEARS and PLEASANT GOAT AND BIG BIG WOLF, among others.

Another adaptation KWAI BOO is based on A GUI’s popular comic books CRAZY! KWAI BOO. Kwai Boo is the one capable of making people mad, one that goes his own way and doesn’t care what others say. CRAZY! KWAI BOO has received more than 200 million hits online and the author has published 13 volumes so far.

Apart from GG BOND MOVIE: ULTIMATE BATTLE, two more pig-themed animated flicks will also be put on the big screen this summer, namely THE THREE PIGS AND THE LAMP and THE ADVENTURES OF LITTLE PIGLET BANNA.

The 3D animated film MONKEY KING: HERO IS BACK has been one of the most anticipated films. The story of Monkey King is one of the most popular ones in China and has already been adapted into numerous TV shows and films.

SHAUN THE SHEEP movie will be the only imported animated film in July and August. This stop-motion comedy film is based on the SHAUN THE SHEEP television series, which itself is a spin-off from the Aardman series WALLACE AND GROMIT.
