BEIJING July 16, 2025 - China’s box-office revenue in the first half of 2015 surged 50.3 percent from a year earlier to $3.28 billion. Domestic films scored $1.54 billion, accounting for 46.8 percent, while imported films collected $1.74 billion, says State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT).
Six regions took in more than 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) while six cinema lines also grossed more than 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) in the first half of 2015.
This year China has witnessed a bunch of new records at the box office.
$68.6 million
On April 12, 2015, FURIOUS 7 raked in a massive $68.6 million on its opening day in China, creating a new record for film’s daily intake. Before that, the number one box office daily record is held by TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION’s $37 million on June 28, 2014.
$72 million
FURIOUS 7 got a 60 percent share in screenings on April 12, but accounted for more than 90 percent box office of that day, which helped set a $72 million record for daily box office with more than 11 million admissions. February 19, 2015, the first day of Chinese New Year, came as the second highest with $59.6 million.
$240 million
The 8th week (Feb 23-March 1) picked up a record $240 million and the week before, the 7th week, also took in as much as $230 million.
$650 million
Box office revenue in February, the Chinese New Year season, hit an all-time high with a massive $650 million, while the US only made $640 million for the same period. It was the first time that China’s monthly box office topped that of US.
28,000
China had about 23,600 screens at the start of the year and the number hit 28,000 by the end of June. An average of 28 new cinema screens were added every day compared with last year’s 15.
