Japan Content Showcase (TIFFCOM), the rights market of the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), has ranged from films to music and animation. It has been held separately from TIFF in terms of time since 2014. This year, it will again run ahead of the festival, from October 20 to 22, 2015, at Grand Pacific Le Daiba, Tokyo.
TIFFCOM has announced that a record high of approximately 1,400 buyers from 49 countries will be at the market and the number of exhibitors from China, Korea and ASEAN countries has significantly increased. On the other hand, TIFFCOM has organized a slate of intensive events and seminars along with the market. Here’s a preview of some worth noticing ones.
Opening the Door to the Chinese Film Market: Recent Trends in China’s Massive Film market, and Keys to Success for Japan-China Co-productions
Rance Pow, the president and founder of Shanghai-based film industry consulting firm Artisan Gateway, will present the latest information on the state of production, market trends, and international collaborations and co-productions in the constantly evolving Chinese film industry. Pow has years of experience on the Chinese film market with strong movie business connections in both China and the United States. Pow served as Vice President of Asia at AMC Entertainment for 5 years before setting up Artisan. The seminar will start at 4 pm on October 21, 2015, at Seminar Room 4.
The Visible Near Future of the Streaming Video Market
Japan’s streaming video market is beginning to undergo a major upheaval after the entry of Netflix and the emergence of the Japan Contents Group’s Bonobo’s platform. This seminar will include two parts. Part one will look at global developments. David Lee, Netflix Japan Vice President, will talk about the accelerating streaming video market and the international potential of Japanese content in this session. The talk will be moderated by Shunji Inoue, President and CEO of Lantis, to discuss the current problems and the future directions of anime conventions in the world. Anime and Regional Communities: On the Frontline - Exploring Different Forms of Collaboration
In the first half the session, Masanari Noda, Assistant Manager at Seibu Railway, will talk about his company’s involvement in projects involving anime and regional communities such as the Chichibu-set hit animated film ANOHANA: THE FLOWER WE SAW THAT DAY, ENCOURAGEMENT OF CLIMB, and KAMISAWA KISS, while Masayuki Wada, President and CEO of XartsJapan, will share his experiences of producing regional events such as the first and second Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair, the Ikebukuro Cinemachi Festival, and the National Anime Mecca Summit. TV Tokyo Corporation and International Co-Productions
Yukio Kawasaki, General Manager of the Animation Division at TV Tokyo Corporation, will discuss the development of past and present international animation co-productions, such as TRAIN HEROES, NANO INVADERS, and CALIMERO. TV Tokyo is one of the major Tokyo television stations, particularly specializing in anime. The seminar will talk about the merchandizing potential for Japanese characters in Asia.
